I am quite found of animes but although my friends have advised me to watch One Piece I never really got to it given the absurd amount of episodes already aired. I tend to binge anime like Hunter X Hunter or Full Metal Alchemist and I just wasn’t ready to abandon my life in order to be glued to a screen for some weeks.
But then I ended up watching the Netflix TV show, and since I wanted to compare it to the anime I eventually started to go down that rabbit-hole…The great thing is, I now have something to watch while stitching for the foreseeable future!
At least something productive came out of it all with this Straw Hat Jolly Roger inspired bag charm!
Roughly cut-out around the different elements of the pattern and secure them to your piece of leather with masking tape.

Use stitching prongs or a hole punch to punch the stitching holes directly on top of the paper.
Use a 3mm hole punch to punch the holes that will accommodate the rivet on the O-ring strap (element annotated J on the pattern).
Use a 5mm and 10mm hole punch to punch the holes representing the eyes and the mouth.
Keep the cut-outs as we’ll paint them and glue them back in later on.

Use an X-Acto knife to cut-out all the pieces of the jolly roger.
Painting the jolly roger
I used Angelus leather paint to paint the different elements of the jolly roger.
The eyes, the mouth and the background has been painted black. The band of the straw hat is of course red and I mixed a little bit of red with yellow to obtain the color of the straw hat. The face and the four bones are painted white. As for the O-ring tab, I used bronze metallic paint.
Preparing the O-ring strap
Close down the end of the O-ring strap (J) around the O-ring and use your rivet setter to secure the rivet in place.
Gluing the eyes and the mouth to the face
Apply some leather glue to the edges of each cut-out. Push the pieces in their original hole on the face (A) and add a generous amount of glue at the back to secure them in place.
Wait for it to dry completely until moving on to the next step.

To stitch the jaws (F) to the background (乙), first stitch the periphery using white thread. Then stitch the lines separating the teeth using black thread.
Stitch all the other elements (C, D, 乙, G, H) to the background (乙) using matching-colored threads.
Finally stitch the background (乙) to the back of the bag charm (我).
As you reach the top, stitch in the O-ring tab (J).
Should you wish to, you can skip that last step and simply use the jolly roger as a patch intended to be stitched on a bag or a jacket!
